Mobile Phones T&T -> SOFT reset & HARD reset on S60 phones

WARNING!!!
BEFORE you try this, make sure you really need it and your data on the phone already backed up, if you don't have the backup of your data on the phone, ALL YOUR DATA ON THE PHONE WILL BE LOST and CANNOT BE RESTORED.

Why you need to "Restore to factory setting"?

At least 2 reasons for this :
- Your phone data already crowded, some application can't run anymore, the phone run very slow, crash anywhere, etc.
- You want to sell your phone, of course you don't want your private data such as SMS, or picture is seen by the buyer of your phone.

There is two way to this, SOFT reset and HARD reset :

- SOFT reset :
On the phone dialler screen, press :
*#7370#
Then you will be ask for the lock code / PIN, the default lock code is :
12345
After you enter the lock code and press Ok, the phone will restart and your phone is like new one.

- HARD reset
Turn off your phone, then hold :
[*] + [3] + [CALL]
Still hold that 3 keys, now turn on your phone (press power)
If you do it correctly, the phone will be formatted without confirmation dialog.

HARD reset is useful when your phone can't be restart or crash when start-up, because you can't do the SOFT reset in this situation, HARD reset is very useful.

Please note that both HARD and SOFT reset will not format the memory card, you need to do it separately.

Mobile Phones T&T -> Record a call on Symbian S60

What you need to record a call on Symbian S60 is only the phone itself, and of course you need a credit to make a call.

To record a call :
1. Make a call or receive a call
2. When the call already connected (e.g. the recipient already answer your call or you already answer received call), run a "Recorder" application, in my N81 I found this application under "Media" folder.
3. On the "Recorder" application, press "Record" button.
4. You are done, your current call with recorded until you press Stop button or you switch out from "Recorder" application.

Limitation :
- Unfortunately, the recorded sound / audio have a limitation to 60 seconds only.

Yes, you have that cool functionallity on your Symbian S60 devices.

For older Symbian S60 devices, there is a "Pen" or "abc" button which usually placed near the [SEND] or [END] button.

For the newer Symbian S60 devices, this button not appear anymore, but replaced by "#" button.

* Mark / unmark items
When you at the listbox interface, e.g. at the list of SMS inbox on messaging application, let's say you want to delete some old SMS. Of course it is take some time to delete it one by one, and also BORING hehehe.
Try the "Pen" / "abc" / "#" button to help you, press and hold that button on the listbox, then press up / down arrow to move through the list. The item you pass will automatically marked. If you don't want to mark that item, press the "Ok" button (the center of four-way navigation button), this will toogle the mark. Then just do what you want with selected item, e.g. delete it. So simple huh :).

* Highlight text
When you on text editor interface, e.g. when you writing an SMS someone, you can highlight the text you've already type with the same button as before.
Move the cursor to the position you want to start highlighting the text, press and hold "Pen" / "abc" / "#" button, and move again your cursor, the text you pass will highlighted. Then just do you want with that highlighted text, e.g. copy, cut, or delet it.

* Copy, cut, paste
When you already have a highlighted text, try press and hold the "Pen" / "abc" / "#" button again. The left softkey (options button) will change its label to "Copy". Try press the "Copy" button, this will cause the right softkey change its label to "Paste".
Now, how about cut functionallity? Actually, there is no special function for this, but you can combine the "Copy" function, "C" or "Clear" key, and "Paste" function hehehe :).

NOTE: Not all listbox interface have mark / unmark functionallity, the "Messaging", "Contacts", and "File manager" application have this type of listbox.

Mobile Phones T&T -> Choose messages storage on Symbian S60 phones

Did you know that you can choose to store the messages you received/sent (SMS, MMS, Email, from bluetooth/infrared) to Phone memory/Memory card.

The default setting for this is 'Phone memory', this means that you have only a small amount of space to store.

Let's say you want to send a media file like MP3 or images to your phone via bluetooh. The media sent will be arrived on Inbox folder, and if the settings is store to 'Phone memory', than hte "Not enough memory" or "Memory full" will displayed, depending on how much memory still available in the phone memory.

You can change the setting to avoid this, at least you have bigger space rather than a limited space of phone memory, here is the steps :
- Go to 'Applications' menu
- Open 'Messaging'
- Press 'Options' then choose 'Settings'
- You will see 'Text message', 'Multimedia message', 'E-mail', etc., in the list. Scroll down to find 'Other', then press 'Options' then 'Open'
- Then change the 'Memory in use' by highlight it and press 'Options' then 'Change'
- Choose 'Memory card' and press 'Ok'
- Press 'Back' until you exit tge Messaging application
- You are done.

Now you have bigger space (depending on how much space available in your memory card) to store all your message.

What do you think about the title?

Do you have anyone you love, your child, your sister, your brother, your husband, or maybe your friends that thing that they are nothing because of their blindness or visually impaired?

YOU MUST CHANGE THEIR MIND!!!

Back to mid-2006, I lost 90%-95% of my vision because of Glaucoma, this is a eye-disease that may cause a high-eye-pressure and if not controlled, the pressure will broke the eye-neuro and may cause blindness.

Since that, practically I can't do anything, I resign from my job as a software developer then vacuum for about 9 months.

On March 2007, we (me and my wife) watch the television about the library for the blind. My wife told me to visit the library. "At least you can read the book even you cannot see it." she told me.

Than, she go with me to the library and see what it looks like.

There, we meet may peoples that have a low-vision or blindness like me.

And WOW, you know, what I see is that they can use the computer, even they are blind. Not just for reading the book, but they can check email, chatting, blogging, and one of them can do programming!!!

Amazing!!! So I interested and then they introduce me to the one software called "JAWS".

And now, I'm already got a new job, as a software developer. Thank's to God.

So, what is JAWS?

JAWS, stands for Job Access with Speech, is a screen reader software, published by Freedom Scientific. Currently, the newest version available is JAWS 10.

How it works? When JAWS running, it will start to read what is it in the screen, so you can use the computer with your ear, without your eyes.

What you can do with it? You can do almost every computing activity, browsing, chatting, emailing, blogging, even programming.

But of course it have limitation, what you can't do is design, of course you need your eyes to do that.

So, from now, tell your loved one not to be hopeless-person. Try this software and looks what they can do with it.

To get the software, go to Freedom Scientific website at : http://www.freedomscientific.com.

There is a 40-minutes version that will stop running after 40 minute and start run again for another 40 minutes after restart the computer. But I think it's enough, at least better than can't do anything. But if you have fund you can buy it.

Let's help them for a better future.

Did you know that that you can check the 15 digits IMEI is valid or not with its checksum?

Yes, you can do it, here is the step :
1. First, take the first 14 digits (the last one, digit #15 is the checksum).
2. For each even digit (digit #2, #4, #6, etc.), multiply it by 2.
3. Sum all the single digit one by one, including the result from step #2. Please note that if the result in step #2 is more than 10, you must separate it to two number, e.g. 17 = 1+7 = 8.
4. Then from the result of step #3, use the following formula :
Checksum = 10 - ([result#3] mod 10)
5. Then compare the Checksum with the digit #15 of the IMEI, if equal, then the IMEI is valid.

Example :
IMEI : 011364005400673
1. first 14 : 01136400540067, checksum=3
2. 0 + (1*2) + 1 + (3*2) + 6 + (4*2) + 0 + (0*2) + 5 + (4*2) + 0 + (0*2) + 6 + (7*2)
3. 0 + 2 + 1 + 6 + 6 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 5 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 6 + (1+4) = 47
4. Checksum = 10 - (47 % 10) = 10 - 7 = 3
5. Checksum = 3, VALID!!!!

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a serial number of your mobile phone, ussualy 15 digits (sometimes 16 digits).

IMEI ussually used for Warranty purpose as a unique identifier.

Sometimes IMEI is used by the software developer or software publisher for registration/activation purposes, so you enter your IMEI number into their website and then the website will generate some code that you can use for register/activate your software that you've been purchased.

Ussually, the IMEI is printed on the phone itself (inside the battery compartment), but you can also get this number by key in this code :
*#06# [Send/dial key]
